Wingardium Leviosa! As curtains open to breathtaking views of the city from the 35th floor of Sunway Putra Hotel – the lofty venue for this year’s Harry Potter-inspired and Yule Ball-themed HMC Annual Ball – a magical night of fellowship, feasting, performances and lucky draws awaited more than 150 students, lecturers and VIPs on the 18th of November.
Chocolates in the shape of the Golden Snitch were given to guests as they arrived in their suits, dresses and Hogwarts colours. The night officially began with speeches by Dean of Faculty of University Foundation Studies Mr. Dhanesh Balakrishnan, Deputy Vice Chancellor of HELP University Dr. Khong Kim Hoong and President of HMC Leads Saw Kai Sheng. Certificates of merit were then presented to top Foundation students from the 2016 intakes.
Kicking the night up a notch, the nominees of Prom King and Queen strutted across the stage like models on the catwalk. As dinner was served, Rachel Chan and her band, Heart Talks filled the room with their lovely voices and music. Other performances included a duet performed by Bernice Lim and Angel Kim, a solo performed by Radhiah and a quartet led by Batrisyia – guests were serenaded with beautiful pieces such as Perfect, I Have Nothing and City of Stars.
After the wonderful performances, it was time to announce the winners for the categories of Best Dressed (Male and Female), Best Smile, Best Bromance, Best Sismance and of course, the highlight of the night, Prom King and Queen (Damansara and Subang). Cheers filled the room as the winners took to the stage to receive their sashes and for the Prom Kings and Queens, their crowns and tiaras.
The performances resumed with the HELP Choir, who captured the hearts of the guests with their melodious harmonies. What’s more, the Prom King and Queen of Damansara campus, Nik and Inarah, changed their outfits and performed a hip-hop dance to liven up the crowd even further! The performances continued with a solo act by Diyana and finally ended with a group act by Mia Sara and her band.
The end of the performances did not mark the end of the night as the dance floor was opened to all guests, and everyone had a great time dancing to songs played by the DJ. The smiles and laughter of all was evidence of the camaraderie between students and lecturers. When the HMC Annual Ball came to a close, everyone agreed that it was a night to be remembered indeed.
